Is Qingdao Tap Water Safe To Drink?
No, it's not advisable to drink the tap water.
Tap water in Qingdao is treated and regulated under China’s national drinking water standards, so the municipal supply is generally considered safe for normal household use. However, water quality can be affected by aging pipes, building storage tanks, or local maintenance after it leaves the treatment plant.
Visitors often choose filtered, boiled, or bottled water for drinking, especially in older buildings or if the water has an unusual taste, odor, or appearance. Tap water is generally suitable for brushing teeth and bathing.

Qingdao’s tap water comes mainly from surface water stored in reservoirs and collected from local river systems. Important local sources include Jihongtan Reservoir, Laoshan Reservoir, and the Dagu River system.
Qingdao also receives water through the Jiaodong Water Diversion Project, which transfers Yellow River water to the city and other parts of eastern Shandong. These sources are treated at municipal waterworks before entering the tap-water network.
