Tap Water Safe

Is Lhasa Tap Water Safe To Drink?

No, it's not advisable to drink the tap water.

Tap water in Lhasa is generally treated municipal water, but I cannot verify that it is safe to drink directly from the tap in all locations. In Tibet, as in many places, it is usually recommended to drink boiled, bottled, or otherwise treated water unless local authorities explicitly say the tap water is potable.

Source of Water in Lhasa, China

Lhasa’s municipal tap water is supplied primarily from local surface water sources in the Lhasa River basin, including tributary rivers and reservoirs used by the city’s water system. The water is treated at municipal water plants before distribution.

Lhasa Drinking Fountains

I cannot verify the safety of public drinking fountains in Lhasa specifically. In general, public fountains are safest only if they are clearly maintained and connected to a treated drinking water supply. If you are unsure, use sealed bottled water or a known treated source instead.
