Source of Water in Kunming, China

Tap water in Kunming mainly comes from surface-water sources, especially Songhuaba Reservoir and other reservoirs in the city’s supply network. The system also receives water through the Niulanjiang water diversion project.

Some parts of Kunming may use groundwater or additional local reservoirs, depending on the district and season. Dianchi Lake is generally not the main direct source of treated municipal drinking water because of its pollution-control requirements.

Kunming Drinking Fountains

Public drinking fountains in Kunming are generally safe when they are clearly maintained, regularly cleaned, and connected to a treated municipal or filtered water supply. Water quality can vary by fountain because filters, dispensing nozzles, and storage tanks require proper maintenance.

For visitors, use fountains that appear clean, have good water flow, and display recent sanitation or maintenance information. Bottled water or freshly boiled tap water is the safer choice when a fountain looks neglected or its maintenance status is unclear.
